GLDA

The Gitemi Language Development Association, or GLDA, was founded as a community based organization (CBO) and registered in 2013 with the Tanzanian government in the Ngorongoro District under the registration number NGOR/DC/CBO/R.1/12/017. The goal of the organization is to promote the use of the Gitemi language. The members of GLDA want to accomplish this through writing Gitemi, teaching mother-tongue literacy, and translation of various books and writing materials, including the Bible. The main office is situated in Digodigo, in the Temi valley.

The vision of GLDA is: To preserve the Gitemi language by means of written materials.

The mission of GLDA is: To promote reading and writing in Gitemi.

The overall goal of GLDA is: To help mother-tongue speakers of Gitemi learn to read and write in their language.

Activities of GLDA include:

  1. Translating the Bible and other books into Gitemi
  2. Holding literacy classes for reading and writing Gitemi
  3. Printing booklets and other writings in Gitemi
  4. Cooperating with other service organizations with the aim of teaching the Batemi
  5. Preparing a Gitemi dictionary

Membership

Membership is open to anyone who would like to join, and is in agreement with the goals of GLDA. You may send a letter of request to the administrator in Digodigo (or see link below). The letter will be brought before the administrative committee, and then before a general meeting. The applicant will be notified when his or her request is approved. There is an initial fee of 10,000/- to join, and afterwards a yearly fee of 20,000/- which will enable the members of GLDA to sustain their activities.

 

Types of Membership

There are 3 categories of members: founding members, ordinary members, and honorary members.

1. The founding members are those who were present from the beginning, and wrote up GLDA’s constitution.

2. Ordinary members are all those who join GLDA from now on. There will be two sections of ordinary members; individuals who want to join, and those who are sent as representatives of other organizations.

3. Honorary members are those who hold positions of leadership within the organizations which they represent.
